Obtain a Permission/Override
Prerequisites
The Arts & Sciences Registrar’s Office maintains a listing of Departments and Programs utilizing prerequisite checking, which is also accessible from the Timetable. If you elect or add a course that is being automatically checked for prerequisites, and you do not have the given prerequisite, you may contact the department or faculty member about permission to enroll in that course. If the department/faculty grants permission, they will assign a Prerequisite Override for that course or section.
There may be other registration errors you will encounter; the prerequisite override only addresses the prerequisite, not instructor permission or enrollment limits.
- Students are reminded they are responsible for meeting prerequisite requirements for all courses regardless of whether the department/program is using prerequisite checking.
- You will need to check with the appropriate department/program to determine who has the authority (department administrator, chair, or other in some cases, in addition to the instructor) to grant overrides.
- You will need to provide the instructor/proxy with specific information about the course/course section that you wish to gain entry and provide him/her with your name and Dartmouth ID in order to assure accurate assignment of the override.
Entry into certain courses requires special permissions. These are indicated in the table below.
